Abstract
Geode is a dedicated app designed to support geocaching clubs, Geode integrates event planning, real-time location tracking, and a built-in rewards system to transform campus exploration into a fun, interactive experience. By enhancing communication and encouraging collaboration, the platform empowers students to connect and build lasting traditions through shared outdoor adventure. This project was recognized for its exceptional execution with a Bronze Award at the 2025 International Design Awards (IDA).
The Engagement Challenge
Students often struggle to explore their campus or participate in club events due to poor communication, a lack of general awareness, and busy academic schedules. Without an efficient way to share information and spark interest, geocaching clubs face low participation rates and difficulty building a strong sense of community. Our research focused on how to work around these time constraints to prioritize convenience while expanding outreach to the student body.
Gamifying Exploration
Geode reimagines the campus experience by turning everyday spaces into opportunities for discovery through location-based clues and hidden caches. To drive sustained engagement, we integrated a centralized gamification system featuring short-term challenges with instant rewards and multi-step quests. A built-in points system, badges, and a public leaderboard promote friendly competition among students.

Core App features
The app's functionality is anchored by a real-time, GPS-enabled interactive map that displays nearby caches, active quests, and live user progress. To solve the communication gap, a dedicated Events Tab lists all upcoming geocaching activities and special club drops, allowing students to RSVP and set reminders in one place. These features ensure that exploration is both easy to access and highly organized.
Social Connection & Collaboration
Beyond the hunt, Geode features an in-app social space where users can share photos, post updates, and celebrate their achievements together. Players can interact by commenting on progress or using direct messaging to form teams and strategize during complex hunts. These social elements are designed to help students reconnect with their environment and each other through shared milestones.
